The Wedding of Preston Bailey and Theo Bleckmann

Today on Preston Bailey’s blog, he posted a great bit of advice about disagreements with your significant other regarding wedding invitations.  When designing invitations for a client, I ask a few very important questions: What do you want your guests to think when they open the invitation?  Do you want them to think it is going to be a formal elegant affair? It is elegant but they’re going to have fun or are you conveying that it is an all out party? In the case of Preston and Theo’s wedding, they really wanted the theme of King Kong to be the focus.  They also wanted the invitations to be whimsical and masculine but also elegant at the same time.

For the invitations, I designed a very whimsical Empire State Building.  It was laser cut as a gatefold with multiple layers of cardstock.  On the inside, I designed a custom hidden pocket behind the photo to hold all of the inserts.  By using silvers and golds, it immediately gave the invitation a more formal feel, but it still stayed whimsical.

For the envelopes, I designed them with a custom flap and they were printed on the inside with an art deco pattern to match the decor of the Empire State Building.  The font was also very art deco and I had each envelope screen printed with each guest’s name and address.  The stamps were also custom designed to match the suite with the Empire State Building.  photos by Robert Evans
